Middle East ramps up investment in research and development

The Middle East's potential for high-value industries is ripe for development

The Middle East is poised for an innovation surge, according to UK analytics firm GlobalData's latest report on Q2 2025 patent activities, indicating potential for significant growth if investments in research and development are ramped up.

While the Middle East and Africa capture a smaller share of the global patents, it is an area ripe for development, suggesting these regions can elevate their status on the global stage by enhancing their contributions to the patent world.

The report contrasts the burgeoning potential in the Middle East with the robust activity in the Asia-Pacific region, where Japan has increased its patent filings by 26% due to more efficient and technologically integrated examination processes.

China, however, is taking a strategic pivot towards enhancing the quality of its patents, evident from a 10% decline in patents granted, aiming to improve the overall standard and international credibility of its patent portfolio.

Europe's patent landscape also demonstrates growth, albeit modest, through activities recorded by the European Patent Office. This incremental growth showcases Europe's evolving role in the global patent ecosystem, setting a foothold for future expansions and greater influence in international patent affairs.

From a sectoral perspective, the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) and healthcare sectors continue to lead in patent filings. These sectors are at the forefront, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity in their operations, marking significant strides in adapting to technological advancements that define industry standards today. The automotive sector is not left behind, showcasing innovations in AI integration with autonomous driving and smart mobility solutions.
